How to fix: iPhone DCIM/Picture folder not showing on Windows 7

I sync my iPhone with my MAC but sometimes I connect my iPhone to my Windows 7 machine in order to copy pictures/movies directly from the iPhone into a folder without using iTunes. For some reason, last time I decided to do that, I could not see the  my iPhone as a windows device anymore. This is what solved my problem:
and
1) The iPhone was not showing as a Windows device:
(clipped from http://community.spiceworks.com/topic/162248-iphone-not-showing-up-in-windows-explorer ) thanks for UYI6067 reply:
"Uninstalled iPhone in Device Manager (with phone connected), unplugged it, waited a minute, then connected and waited for automatic install to take its course. Resolved!"

2) The iPhone now showed as a Windows device but the DCIM folder was empty (not loading properly):
(clipped from http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-pictures/i-cannot-see-any-photos-in-the-dcim-folder-of-my/92a7c831-539a-48a5-b199-2b2a1213d343 ) thanks for d0ppay 's reply:
" If your screen locks on the iPhone/iPad, and if it was locked while you plugged it into your computer, then the DCIM folder that typically contains all the pictures on your camera roll will be empty (security). Unlock and plug it back in to USB. Detailed steps here: http://davidvielmetter.com/tips/access-the-dcim-folder-on-your-iphone/
"

Those 2 actions fixed my problem.

Have an iPhone6 and when plugging into a Windows machine (Windows7 Enterprise), the PC would always recognize the phone, begin charging and AutoPlay would pop up. But it would rarely find the DCIM folder. I could sometimes read the used/free status from Properties, but no DCIM. Uninstalled the iPhone from DevMgr, waited a bit, plugged the phone back in, driver re-installed itself and voila! Back in business. Thanks.

I've tried everything you all stated multiple times and am still unable to see any pictures in my DCIM folder. I've also tried it on multiple machines, so I'm assuming it is some setting in my phone that is preventing me from accessing my photos on the PC. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thank you for all your Thank You notes, it is good to know this is actually helping others!

@Neal, I am sorry this did not fix your problem. I am just an user like you that decided to post solutions to my own problems in this blog with the intention it could help others but I do not have the cycles to work on other problems (at least not until I retire!). In any case, I am glad you found this, at least you know what did not work for you but did work for others! If I ever have this problem again and in case I need and find another fix I will post it here. Good luck!

I trick the computer, I plug phone to computer and I let I-tunes sync with my phone. then I disconnect usb and re-plug right back and close I-tunes at the same time before it has a chance to recognize it. so computer will instead pop up drive as internal storage option. Then i could get to DCIM folder.

The Real Solution!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If your Iphone is discoverable but your DCIM is empty......

On Iphone go into settings/photos & camera. Then click on Download & Keep Originals.
That is it. DCIM will now list its contents on PC. Your welcome bitches!

Perfect solution!
The official Apple support says you should used iCloud to solve the problem, but that is an unneccessary workaround.

"Unknown"'s May 19 solution woks. I'm on Iphone 6S with iOS 11.2 (recently installed which might be why it used to work but stopped. For 11.2, On
Iphone go into Settings/Photos. Scroll down to bottom, where it says "Transfer to MAC or PC", mine was on automatic. Just check Keep Originals. Unplug phone (if it was in), replug, on PC Windows Explorer drill down into iPhone 'drive' Internal Storage, and it should be expandable to the DCIM folder. I have W7 home premium 64 bit.

After trying all of the above, updating my ITunes, drivers, and iphone6; nothing works. I think this is the last iphone I will buy - I am fed up with Apples business attitude (I only upgraded from my 4G because it was slow - and we hear that was Apples deviant/devious behaviour).
