Fly at 45MPG and forget about your Prius...

Why use a Prius when you can move at 200MPH @ 45MPG?

Hypermiling Plane Gets 45 MPG at 207 MPH, Capable of 100 MPG (That's Better Than Most Cars!)

fuel efficient plane modified VariEze photo

With 2 People on Board (Unlike Photo Above)
Klaus Savier likes to have his cake and eat it too. Usually with airplanes, speed and efficiency are a tradeoff. You go slower and burn less fuel, or you go faster and burn more fuel (all else being equal). This is why it is impressive that Mr. Savier won this year's Fuelventure 400 in his modified VariEze (originally designed by the famous Burt Rutan) by getting 45 MPG at 207 MPH, and this with two people on board (and for those wondering, there were no massive tailwinds or anything of the sort).

Savier has altered his Vari-EZ and its Continental 0-200 engine by adding computerized fuel injection and ignition systems of his own design. He typically flies at 190 KTAS while getting a Prius-like 50 miles per gallon. If he slows to extend range, Savier's mileage approaches 100 miles per gallon.

B&N Nook and Amazon Kindle Killer

this could be a good proposition to replace current Nook or the Amazon Kindle e-book reader. The only missing piece is the content provider.

Spring Design Announces Dual-Screen,
Google Android-based E-book Reader, Hyperlinking Text with Multimedia

Secondary color touchscreen supplements text with web-based or any linked multimedia content; Enables users to enhance original text with their own embedded video, audio, photos and notes
FREMONT, CA – OCTOBER 19, 2009 --

Alex’s dual-screen display design brings together the efficiency of reading on a monochrome EPD (electronic paper display) screen while dynamic hyperlinked multimedia information and third party input on its secondary color LCD screen, actually an integrated Android mobile device, opens a rich world of Internet content to support the text on the main screen.

Alex is the first Google Android-based e-book device to provide full Internet browsing over Wi-Fi or mobile networks such as 3G, EVDO/CDMA and GSM.

Spring Design Dual-Screen Alex e-Book Reader Announced — Yes, It Does Exist
The rumor of an e-book reader with a typical e-Ink screen that also had a small color touchscreen for navigation and content display created a stir in the digital book world. Such a device could easily be leveraged by Barnes & Noble for a dedicated e-book reader tailored for book shopping on the device.
The Spring Design Alex runs the Google Android OS and has a 6-inch e-Ink screen for displaying book content. The secondary screen is a 3.5-inch color touchscreen that can display multimedia content, and aid in navigating through both the reader and online content as Alex has 3G (EVDO/CDMA/GSM) integrated into the device. The reader will have full browsing capabilities due to the Android OS, supporting bookmarks, and full-featured web surfing. This includes the ability to cache web content for later reading on the e-Ink display.

B&N eBook Reader - Nook

I would buy one for Christmas if it had a browser. Not sure how far B&N is from a more intelligent device though. Nook runs Google Android, has WiFi access (free at B&N stores), allow downloads over-the-air using AT&T 3G network (access is included in the price of the device), has USB and its memory can be expanded by using a mini-SDCard. To me, it looks like an iPhone with a bigger display! (I am sure Apple has one in the works...)

Great Uses for Old Wireless Routers

I will try to create a wireless bridge with an old router and will post the results when done!

8 Great Uses for Old Wireless Routers

Don't throw away your old 802.11g routers just yet. The new slick-looking 802.11n routers may provide higher speeds and performance, but there are still many ways your old gear can help out, including extending your wireless coverage, improving a new network, assisting in offering public Wi-Fi, providing network authentication, or enabling secure remote or site-to-site VPN connections.

1) Extend coverage by using it as an AP

2) Relieve 802.11n routers from supporting 802.11g

3)Make it a repeater to take the signal further

4) Use it as a wireless bridge

5) Offer VPN connections or connect offices together

6) Turn it into a hotspot

7) Make it a RADIUS server

Picasa - How to transfer face tag informatoin to other computers

If you still did not try the lastest version of Picassa you probably don't know what I am talking about. If you did, this is probably useful in case you use multiple computers and like to have back up copies of your photo library.
    clipped from www.google.com
A: There are a few different ways to transfer your face tags:
    1) You can perform a Backup of your photos and restore them on your new
computer. This process will preserve your face tags. ("Tools" >
    "Backup Pictures")
    2) You can copy your files *and* the .picasa.ini file from your hard drive to the new destination

    3) Upload your face tag albums to Picasa Web Albums and download the album to the new destination
on option 3: In order for your contact information to
be preserved you'll need to make sure that your contacts associated
with your face tags are marked as "Online Contacts."  This means that
    the person
is synchronized with Google Contacts.  After copying the photos to the
destination computer, make sure you are logged in to your Google user
account so that Picasa can retrieve your Google Contacts and update
your face tags with the corresponding information. See reference
section for more info on syncing contacts.

Prototype Nokia phone recharges without wires

    Tue Jun 16, 2009 1:06PM EDT

Holy Grails of technology: Wireless power.

Nokia, however, has taken another baby step in that direction with the invention of a cell phone that recharges itself using a unique system: It harvests ambient radio waves from the air, and turns that energy into usable power. Enough, at least, to keep a cell phone from running out of juice.

Mind you, harvesting ambient electromagnetic energy is never going to offer enough electricity to power your whole house or office, but it just might be enough to keep a cell phone alive and kicking. Currently Nokia is able to harvest all of 5 milliwatts from the air; the goal is to increase that to 20 milliwatts in the short term and 50 milliwatts down the line.

    by Sam Dean - May. 07, 2009Comments (1)
The new version 3.1 of the OpenOffice.org suite of open source productivity applications is now available for download. It appears to be a hot download today, too, because I experienced some wait times getting to the OpenOffice site. For this release, users of OpenOffice were asked to vote for their most desired new features, and the wish list helped dictate goals for version 3.1. There are enhanced on-screen graphics and improvements to all the applications in the suite. Here are details on what's under the hood.

    Microsoft's Cloud Office

Google has a head start over MS on this one but has also another advantage, they understand the need to support all platform/browser combination. You can only use Office Live if you are running "major" OSs: Microsoft or Max OS, no Linux or Unix (Solaris) support.

Microsoft's cloud Office lands one million users

That's one-tenth of Google Apps then...

One million customers have signed up to Microsoft's Office Live Workspace online collaboration tool, six months after its beta launch.

In comparison, Google's online collaboration technology, Google Apps, has secured 10 million active users two years after its release.
